About the Artist:
Helen Rogers came to clay indirectly. She abandoned a youthful love affair with art to pursue a career in chemistry through college and graduate school, only to discover that at the heart of scientific discovery is a creative artist. By day she is a globe-trekking disease detective employed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and at night she re-visits memories of hiking and camping around the world. In between, she exercises her passion for making things…stories, music, and creatures.
Animals that populate Cumberland and Ossabaw Islands in Georgia are the inspiration and setting for the short stories she writes and interprets as sculpture. Each sculpture represents a pivotal moment and character in the stories, and is carefully constructed by hand using clay, slip, velvet under-glaze, and high-fire glaze. Details are added using fiber, polymer clay and other found materials.
Helen lives in Avondale Estates, GA with her patient husband, an out-of-control dog, and an agitated cat.
